Best Hidden Gems on Hulu You Probably Haven’t Seen

Hulu has a strange problem. There are a lot of good movies on it, but finding them can feel harder than it should.

The homepage tends to push whatever is new, familiar, or already popular. Meanwhile, some of the better movies in the catalog sit a few rows down waiting for someone to stumble across them.

So this isn't another list filled with movies you've already been told to watch twenty times.

These are some of the best hidden gems on Hulu right now, from sharp comedies and overlooked thrillers to sci-fi, romance, horror and a few movies that are simply difficult to categorize.

Availability can change as Hulu rotates its catalog, but these picks are available on Hulu in the U.S. at the time of writing.

The Best Hidden Gems on Hulu Right Now

1. Rye Lane

Genre: Romance, Comedy
Year: 2023
Watch if you like: Before Sunrise, Past Lives, Cha Cha Real Smooth

Rye Lane follows two strangers, Yas and Dom, who meet while both are trying to recover from messy breakups.

That's about as conventional as the movie gets.

Most of the film takes place over one day in South London, following the pair through markets, restaurants, awkward encounters with exes and increasingly ridiculous situations. David Jonsson and Vivian Oparah have the kind of chemistry that makes even two people walking down a street entertaining.

It's funny without turning into a full romantic comedy caricature, romantic without getting overly sentimental, and visually much more playful than the average movie in the genre.

At only around 80 minutes, it also knows exactly when to leave.

Why it's worth watching: One of the easiest movies on this list to recommend to almost anyone.

2. No One Will Save You

Genre: Sci-Fi, Horror, Thriller
Year: 2023
Watch if you like: Signs, A Quiet Place, 10 Cloverfield Lane

Kaitlyn Dever plays a young woman living alone on the outskirts of town who discovers something very unwelcome inside her house.

Aliens.

What makes No One Will Save You unusual is how little dialogue it uses. The movie has to communicate almost everything through movement, sound and Dever's performance, which makes the whole thing feel more tense and isolated.

The first alien encounter is reason enough to watch it. There isn't much waiting around for the plot to start.

It's also a good pick for anyone who likes their science fiction mixed with horror. If that's your lane, we've also put together our guide to the best sci-fi movies on Netflix right now.

Why it's worth watching: A lean alien thriller that actually does something different with a very familiar setup.

3. Palm Springs

Genre: Comedy, Romance, Sci-Fi
Year: 2020
Watch if you like: Groundhog Day, About Time, The Map of Tiny Perfect Things

The less you know about Palm Springs before watching it, the better.

Andy Samberg plays Nyles, a guest at a wedding in Palm Springs who meets Sarah, played by Cristin Milioti. Things get weird soon afterward.

Very weird.

It would have been easy for the movie to coast on its central gimmick, but Palm Springs works because Samberg and Milioti are genuinely good together. Beneath all the chaos is a surprisingly thoughtful movie about boredom, commitment and what happens when nothing you do seems to matter anymore.

J.K. Simmons also shows up and makes the movie considerably stranger.

Why it's worth watching: Smart, funny and ridiculously rewatchable.

4. Fresh

Genre: Horror, Thriller
Year: 2022
Watch if you like: The Menu, Promising Young Woman, Barbarian

If you've somehow avoided spoilers for Fresh, keep it that way.

Daisy Edgar-Jones plays Noa, a woman exhausted by dating apps who meets Steve, played by Sebastian Stan, while grocery shopping. He seems charming, normal and refreshingly disconnected from the whole online dating circus.

Then they go away together for the weekend.

Things do not improve from there.

The movie spends enough time making the relationship believable that when it finally reveals what it's actually about, the shift lands beautifully.

Sebastian Stan is having an alarming amount of fun in this movie.

Why it's worth watching: Go in blind and don't watch the full trailer first.

5. Self Reliance

Genre: Comedy, Thriller
Year: 2024
Watch if you like: Game Night, The Running Man, The Game

Jake Johnson gets into a limousine with Andy Samberg and is offered a simple proposition.

Survive for 30 days while people try to kill him and he wins $1 million.

There is one useful rule. The assassins aren't allowed to attack him while he's with another person.

Naturally, his first problem is convincing everyone he knows that any of this is actually happening.

Self Reliance takes a premise that sounds like an action thriller and turns it into a very Jake Johnson comedy about loneliness, paranoia and trying to find someone willing to follow you into the bathroom so you don't get murdered.

It doesn't take itself too seriously and is considerably more charming because of it.

Why it's worth watching: A great pick when you want something weird without committing to something completely unhinged.

6. Theater Camp

Genre: Comedy
Year: 2023
Watch if you like: Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman, School of Rock

There is a specific kind of person who will watch Theater Camp and immediately recognize at least three people from their childhood.

The movie follows the eccentric teachers and students of an upstate New York theater camp after its founder falls into a coma and her deeply unqualified son is forced to keep the camp alive.

Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman direct it like a mockumentary, giving the cast plenty of room to be ridiculous.

Ben Platt, Molly Gordon, Noah Galvin and Jimmy Tatro are all great, but the kids regularly steal the movie.

You don't need to care about theater to enjoy it. It may help if you've ever met someone who cared about theater a little too much.

Why it's worth watching: One of those comedies that becomes much funnier when you watch it with the right group of people.

7. Quiz Lady

Genre: Comedy
Year: 2023
Watch if you like: Bridesmaids, Game Night, Plan B

Awkwafina and Sandra Oh play sisters who could barely be more different.

Anne is quiet, anxious and obsessed with a television quiz show. Jenny is chaotic enough to make basically every situation worse.

When they need money to deal with their mother's gambling debts, Jenny decides the obvious solution is to turn Anne into a game show contestant.

It isn't reinventing comedy, and it doesn't need to. Quiz Lady works because Awkwafina plays against type while Sandra Oh gets permission to behave like a lunatic for 99 minutes.

Will Ferrell also appears as a surprisingly sweet game show host.

Why it's worth watching: A very solid Friday-night movie that asks almost nothing from you.

8. Boston Strangler

Genre: Crime, Thriller, Drama
Year: 2023
Watch if you like: Zodiac, Spotlight, The Post

Despite having Keira Knightley, Carrie Coon and Chris Cooper in the cast, Boston Strangler came and went with surprisingly little noise.

Knightley plays Loretta McLaughlin, the journalist who begins connecting a series of murders in 1960s Boston. Carrie Coon plays fellow reporter Jean Cole, who joins her as the investigation grows.

The film is less interested in turning the killer into some larger-than-life monster and more interested in the reporters trying to figure out what is happening while fighting to be taken seriously inside their own newsroom.

It doesn't have the obsessive sprawl of Zodiac, but fans of investigative thrillers will feel at home quickly.

Why it's worth watching: A restrained true-crime movie with two excellent lead performances.

9. Suncoast

Genre: Drama, Comedy
Year: 2024
Watch if you like: Lady Bird, The Farewell, The Edge of Seventeen

Suncoast is inspired by writer-director Laura Chinn's own experiences as a teenager.

Nico Parker plays Doris, whose life largely revolves around helping her mother care for her seriously ill brother. When he is moved into hospice care, Doris suddenly gets something resembling a normal teenage life for the first time.

That means new friends, parties, bad decisions and a friendship with an activist played by Woody Harrelson.

Laura Linney plays Doris' mother, and the relationship between the two gives the movie most of its weight.

The subject matter sounds heavy because it is heavy, but the film never spends two hours trying to emotionally bludgeon you.

Why it's worth watching: Quiet, funny in unexpected places, and much warmer than its premise suggests.

10. The Valet

Genre: Romantic Comedy
Year: 2022
Watch if you like: Notting Hill, Maid in Manhattan, The Proposal

A famous actress gets photographed with her married lover.

Unfortunately for Antonio, a valet parking attendant played by Eugenio Derbez, he happens to be standing in the background of the photo.

Her team comes up with a solution. Pretend Antonio is actually her boyfriend.

You can probably guess some of what happens next.

That isn't necessarily a criticism.

The Valet knows what kind of movie it is and does it well. Samara Weaving and Derbez make the central relationship work, while the movie finds plenty of comedy in the absurd difference between their lives.

It also gives Antonio's family far more personality than you'd usually get from the supporting characters in this kind of rom-com.

Why it's worth watching: An old-school romantic comedy setup with a cast that's easy to spend two hours with.

11. The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat

Genre: Drama, Comedy
Year: 2024
Watch if you like: Fried Green Tomatoes, Steel Magnolias, The Color Purple

Odette, Clarice and Barbara Jean have been friends for decades, earning themselves the nickname "The Supremes."

The movie follows that friendship across different stages of their lives as the three women deal with marriage, grief, illness and a considerable amount of history between them.

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Sanaa Lathan and Uzo Aduba lead the cast.

This is the kind of mid-budget adult drama that used to appear in theaters constantly and now tends to quietly arrive on streaming instead.

If you've been wondering where those movies went, here's one.

Why it's worth watching: Strong performances and characters who feel like they've actually known each other for decades.

12. Prey

Genre: Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller
Year: 2022
Watch if you like: Predator, Apocalypto, The Revenant

Calling Prey a hidden gem is admittedly pushing the definition a little. It got plenty of attention when it was released, but there are still a surprising number of people who skipped it because they assumed they needed to care about the larger Predator franchise.

You really don't.

Set in the Comanche Nation in the early 1700s, the film follows Naru, a young hunter who realizes something much more dangerous than the animals she knows is stalking the land.

Amber Midthunder is excellent in the lead role, and director Dan Trachtenberg strips the franchise back to what made the original work in the first place: one very capable person trying to survive something much stronger than them.

There is even a Comanche-language version available.

Why it's worth watching: Easily one of the strongest Predator movies and a very good action movie even if you've never seen another one.

Why Are Good Movies So Easy to Miss on Streaming?

Having thousands of movies available sounds great until you actually have to choose one.

Streaming apps have become very good at showing you a small group of titles repeatedly. Open Hulu on three different nights and there's a decent chance you'll recognize most of the first few rows.

That doesn't mean the catalog is shallow.

It means discovery is the problem.

Some movies arrive with huge campaigns. Others get a trailer, a release-week push and then disappear beneath whatever arrived seven days later.

That's one reason movie communities still matter. Someone recommending a movie because they watched it and couldn't stop talking about it is very different from an algorithm deciding that people who watched Movie A also clicked Movie B.

That's exactly what we're building with Global Cinephiles on Tribe Chat, a place to swap recommendations, argue about movies, find overlooked releases and figure out what to watch next with people who are just as obsessed with film.

Final Thoughts

The best thing about looking for hidden gems is that you're not trying to find the objectively greatest movie on Hulu.

You're trying to find the movie you somehow missed.

For some people on this list, that'll be Rye Lane. For others it'll be Fresh, Suncoast or the Jake Johnson movie they didn't even know existed.

Start with whichever one sounds slightly outside your usual rotation.

That's usually where the good stuff is.
