The Best Day Trips from San Francisco Within Two Hours
One of the quiet luxuries of living in the Bay Area is how fast you can leave it. Within two hours you can be among redwoods, in wine country, on a wild beach, or in a mountain town — no flight required. Here are the day trips worth the drive.
North: Marin and the coast
Muir Woods and Mount Tamalpais are the classics for a reason, but push a little farther to Point Reyes for oyster shacks, empty beaches, and the famous shipwreck. Stinson Beach is the easy version if you just want sand and a short drive. Bring layers — the coast makes its own weather.
Wine country: Napa and Sonoma
An hour-plus north gets you to wine country, and the move is to pick one town — Healdsburg, Sonoma, Calistoga — and stay put rather than racing between tastings. South: Santa Cruz and the coast

East: the Delta and beyond
